A Tribute to Matt Gonsalves
On February 15, 2018, the concrete industry lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being, when Matt Gonsalves passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
Matt founded Conco Concrete in 1958, and several years after, when faced with the issues surrounding concrete slabs on grade failing because of expansive soils, began work developing the Wafflemat foundation-forming system. After nearly 20 years of R&D and several renditions, the first slabs utilizing today’s Wafflemat design were installed in a 1,000 home project in the Bay Area in 1993.
Since that time, millions of sf of Wafflemat foundations have been installed in projects throughout the Mainland USA and Hawaii. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Matt have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Matt’s spirit will forever be the foundation of Conco — and, the Wafflemat. The construction industry and community are immeasurably better because of Matt Gonsalves.
